A metal detector led to the unearthing of a 97-ounce gold nugget, which was eventually sold to an undisclosed purchaser for a whopping $400,000. Like many gold prospectors, Brown takes great pleasure in giving his significant discoveries unique names. In line with this tradition, he has decided to christen his special find “Fair Dinkum,” an Australian expression that signifies authenticity and genuineness.
In a casual conversation with The Age, Brown expressed that when individuals feel the weight of the nugget, they exclaim, “Geez, this is massive!”
Credit must be given to his wife for motivating him to venture outside on the day he stumbled upon the nugget. As stated in Brown’s recollection shared with The Age, he was feeling a bit grouchy as he was two weeks into his journey of quitting smoking. His better half suggested that he go outside for some fresh air. Consequently, he embarked on a 64-mile journey southward to Wedderburn – a location he had previously explored in search of gold.
In recounting his experience, Brown shared the moment his metal detector responded to the colossal gold deposit beneath the earth’s surface. “You wouldn’t believe it, but that sound just about knocked me socks off,” he chuckled, marveling at the striking signal summoned by the device.
After digging a mere six inches into the ground, he managed to get a hold of the horn-shaped protuberances of the “Fair Dinkum” nugget and successfully extract it from the soil. In the beginning, he mistook it for a large blob of copper, but soon realized it was actually a piece of gold. To commemorate his good fortune, he cracked open a cold beer and indulged in a celebratory drink.
However, in an effort to prevent a gold rush frenzy, Brown opted not to disclose the exact location of his discovery. Nevertheless, he had no qualms about exhibiting the magnificent “Fair Dinkum” nugget to others. He humorously questioned whether he should say, “Yes, I found a nugget, but you can’t lay eyes on it,” implying that he found it cool and thrilling to showcase the nugget, causing excitement among those who saw it.
Brown shared his plans to use the profits from selling the nugget to purchase a luxurious home spa for his wife and four daughters. Despite this significant windfall, Brown remains driven and motivated to stumble upon an even larger nugget one day. In his words, “There are immense 10-kilo nuggets out there just waiting to be discovered.”
While Brown’s “Fair Dinkum” nugget is undeniably sizable, it pales in comparison to other colossal nuggets uncovered in the Australian countryside. For instance, in 1981, the massive 256-ounce “Pride of Australia” was found nearby in Mosquito Gully, situated just north of Wedderburn.
